Week 1: what I hope to accomplish in our class

This is the plan for Advanced Art for 2019-2020.

So for this week--get started on sketches, and come up with an idea of what you want to do for your first passport. You can even start the research part of it. BE SURE to let me know if you need me to bring you any supplies for the first passport next week.

During Class:

*first challenge: design a passport cover design for Mrs. C., an eagle holding a brush and pencil?? Extra credit!!

*We will read a little bit each class in: “Art and Fear”, excerpts of “Daily Rituals,” excerpts of various other texts

*Learn about art history (ap level). I have a text book covering AP Art History and plan to give lectures and presentations based on it and other supplementary texts

* We will talk about art presentation, framing and portfolios, digital scans, ap portfolio submission and/or juries shows

* We will play art games: matching, puzzles, obstacle course type games

* Each week you will show Mrs. C your daily sketches from the previous week:

         

*show Mrs. C your progress on your passports either through photos or by bringing your project to class

*Some classes we will devote to a group project or exploring a different technqiue. We may also go on short field trips in class depending on how your progress is coming with your passport projects.

At Home and In Class:

*sketch daily (for a minimum of 5 minutes, but can do longer, write date/start & stop times), different options, focusing on honing skills: 

  Ideas and options for daily sketching: 

           1) draw things from different angles: above, each side, below, etc.

           2) do gesture and life drawing at the zoo, mall, musicians practicing or playing, your 

           pets, kids at the park, people waiting for bus, the skate park

           3) draw buildings around town

           4) draw people from magazines, newspapers, youtube videos, etc.

           5) draw different cars you see

           6) draw the same plant every day as it grows and transforms

           7) draw what you eat

           8) DRAW DRAW DRAW DRAW DRAW!!!

*learn about in-depth and excel in the mediums/subject matter/style of your choice (by follow 1 or more levels of passports): 

Pick a type of art/medium to work in:

-printmaking

-acrylic painting

-watercolor painting

-gouache painting

-oil painting

-graphite drawing

-colored pencil drawing

-charcoal drawing

-polymer clay

-natural clay (more about modeling, excluding pots)

-papier-mâché

-mixed media

-add your own ideas:

AND then complete a passport checklist (this will be printed out next week and there will be online forms for parts of it), each medium/subject matter/ style will have options of levels 1-4 passports. You do not have to do all four levels for each medium you choose, you can just do 1 of several different mediums/subject matters/styles...but your goal is to reach 500 points each semester.

500 points = A

400 points = B

300 points = C

200 points = D (This will not happen, because we will talk about it if you're getting behind)

Level 1 (50 pts, should take 1-3 weeks to complete):

AA. 2 sources listed: could be videos, books or interviews of artists (*this counts as 2), Mrs C has LOTS of books and can recommend videos and artists, just fill out request form

A. Vocabulary: 5 words, make a quizlet or notebook paper or flash cards

B. Techniques specific to that medium/genre: 2 definitions & examples from other artists’ work, 2 examples of student exploration. Glued On paper or in a folder

C. List at least 1 Master of that medium/genre, modern or historical: examples of their work, 5 facts about their life and 5 about their art: worksheet or notebook paper

D. Project complete a smaller exploratory project, include the steps for project (outline, rough draft sketches, practicing (this can include explorations from B, if so mark this clearly),

E. Complete self evaluation of your project

F. Present piece to class for discussion

Level 2 (75 pts, should take 2-3 weeks to complete):

AA. 3-4 sources listed: could be videos, books or interviews of artists (*this counts as 2)

A. Vocabulary: 10 words

B. Techniques specific to that medium/genre: 5 definitions & examples from other artists’ work, 5 examples of student exploration

C. List at least 2-3 Master of that medium/genre, modern or historical: examples of their work, 7 facts about their life and 7 about their art

D. Project complete a medium sized or more detailed project, include the steps for project (outline, rough draft sketches, practicing (this can include explorations from B, if so mark this clearly),

E. Complete self evaluation

F. Present piece to class for discussion

Level 3 (between 100-150 pts, should take 3-6 weeks)

AA. 4-6 sources listed: could be videos, books or interviews of artists (*this counts as 2), biographical films can count, but only as one of your 4-6 sources

A. Vocabulary: 15 words

B. Techniques specific to that medium/genre: 8 definitions & examples from other artists’ work, 8 examples of student exploration (you can copy smaller parts of an artists work), OR copy a master’s (must be dead for 70+ years) piece that uses the techniques you’re studying and explaining (if you’re copying a whole piece, you don’t have to 8, necessarily, discuss with Mrs.C)

C. List at least 3-4 Masters of that medium/genre, modern or historical: examples of their work, 7 facts about their life and 7 about their art OR write a biographical paper about an artist you previous studied in levels 1 or 2, include: their origins, their influences, their periods or changes in their style or work over time, who they subsequently influenced

D. Project complete a larger sized or more detailed (should take longer!) project, include the steps for project (outline, rough draft sketches, practicing (this can include explorations from B, if so mark this clearly),

E. Complete self evaluation

F. Present piece to class for discussion/analysis

Level 4 (between 200-300 points, should take 4-8 weeks):

A. Write a story, or create a visual aid that shows/teaches the vocabulary you’ve learned about for this passport

B. Do a presentation about the techniques you’ve learned: make a video for the class, or demonstrate the techniques (must arrange for this ahead of class)

C. As part of B, dress up as artist, OR draw a portrait of them (can be simple sketch, cartoon or caricature, or more elaborate if you prefer)

D Complete a series/collection of projects at least 3, that show case what you’ve learned

E. Complete self evaluation

F. Present pieces to class for discussion/analysis OR work/serious at displaying your art at the library, a coffee shop, etc
